Hello Ballroom Community. My name is Rell LaPerla, and this is "Legendary": The New And Improved Midwest Awards Ball 2009, hosted by Legendary Antwon Balenciaga and Legendary Tyanna Milan. The ball start time was 12:50AM, and the ball end time was approximately 3:15AM. The tables, which cost $125, were garnished with a small shrimp cocktail ring, a 750ml(also referred to as a "5th") bottle of Nuvo, the world's first sparkling liquor, a package with an assortment of Godiva chocolates, a fruit bouquet by Edible Arrangements, a cute little candle in a cute little candle holder, and 8 place settings that included the soup bowl and plate, silverware, and a champagne flute w/ a cloth napkin placed inside.

In my opinion, the ball was really nice while it lasted. When it comes to the venue, it was not the biggest space, but it was an accommodable for the crowd, and the set up and the way it was decorated was definately much, much more than tolerable. When it comes to the tables, I felt that I got pretty close to what I paid for this time instead of just an empty table. When it comes to the categories, I enjoyed everything that I saw...for the most part. The best categories of the night were Innovative Face and Vogue Fem. For Innovative Face, everyone who got their 10s was SITTING! Iesha Balenciaga, women's face, is definately gonna make noise. The Vogue Fem battles were a kee kee, but very entertaining. The Berlin and Marquis "floor performance" battle was definately something to see!! There were a few memorable moments of the night for me. One was when Memphis Prodigy showed up for his 10s. He pops onto the runway in this Elvis-inspired effect and says, "Is this 10s for Vogue Fem?" with this little black multi-colored rhinestoned microphone. I fell out! His battle with Rocky Evisu was funny too. He commentated DOWN! on his mic as he gave you duckwalk after duckwalk. Another memorable moment was when Father Charmaine Escada confronted Legendary Father Mario Balenciaga about a chop. He leaned over the judges table, got right in Mario's face, and said, "It's always you!!! It's always you!!!" as he waived his finger vivaciously at Mario. My last memorable moment was when the ball had been shut down, you could see different people dropping silverware into their purses and bags. My only complaint about this ball is the order of categories wasn't accessible to the public. The judges didn't even have a copy; neither did they have a a copy of the ballroom flyer. Not sure what the reason was for not providing them to anyone but the commentators, but it was definately an inconvenience.
The reason given for ending the bald before all categories were completed was there was shooting on the corner of 51st and S. Prairie, only yards from the venue, and the police was locking down the area, so everyone had to vacate the premises. A simple enough and understandable explanation, BUT being that I stood outside of the ball waiting for my cab until 4:15AM and I saw the police take down the caution tape used to designate the "crime scene" at approximately 4:00AM, I have my suspicions on how true this "murder" was, so I'll be waiting for an official news report. I've just never heard of a crime scene investigation happening so expeditiously.
Well in close, I had a great time. I was able to see, migle with, and have fun with people that I like to be in the company of, for whatever reason that may have been. So thank you Tyanna and Antwon for providing me with that opportunity. Congratulations to all the award winners of the night, and hope to see you all again soon! The Midwest "Peoples Choice Ball: "INSTRUMENTALIST"

The air was calm and the night was thick with anticipation of a fabulous night at the 5th Annual People’s Choice Awards Ball; hosted by the legendary Marco Herrera and Legendary Solomon Infiniti. Going to balls in the Midwest for Andromeda has become a careful selective process, to insure that our house members are going to be getting their money’s worth at these function, and to help promote the talented nature of our community. At the 5th Annual People’s Choice Awards Ball, The House of Andromeda got its money worth and more; the function was very nice.
To bring you closer to the scope of our enjoyment, I will being by telling you that the doors opened on time (11Pm) and all the major components of the ball were in place by the time we arrived, which was around 12:34 am. Once inside the venue, I was greeted and welcomed by both host of the function. The building was already packed with people as we walked inside to find a place to enjoy the function. There were extra chairs all along the walls of the building to accommodate those participants that didn’t have tables. The tables had looking that the tables, that where in great location and most of them had enough chair for 8 to 10 people, and they were decorated. They also included all the following items such as: Refreshments, treats, up-coming Ball Fliers, and saver sex information with supplies.
All too often, Host of the ball think more about the money they can make as opposed to the safety and wellbeing of it goers, but the stars were shinning again on Marco, Solomon, and their supporter because on this night, the warning came out like a lightening rode from the sky: “There is to be no smoking in the facility of any kind,” directed by the hosts. From that point on, I know it was going to be a nice function and that’s why as the Legendary father of Andromeda, I pick and choose careful function to take my members and our guest too when we are introducing them to the Ball Scene. Security was on point inside and outside for the most part and there wasn’t much disruption.
The performances were over the top and the battles were off the wall. Marlo Chanel and the legendary Father Gentry Andromeda walked Oldway down but the judge’s chopped them both. Most importantly, they enjoyed their individual performance because it showed a cooperation of two houses (Andromeda and Chanel) to work together, to have fun presenting the oldway style of voguing to the ballroom participant, and they gave them love. Congratulation to Marlo Chanel; up in coming legendary oldway, for your win as: The People Choice Award for OLDWAY OF THE YEARS 2008-09. “You did it”.
Overall, the House of Andromeda enjoyed our experience at the function and we plan to attend many more events hosts by Legendary Marco Herrera and Legendary Solomon Infiniti. As host, they provided a warm experience and showed great appreciation for the ball community coming out to support them.

To often, it’s said by outsiders looking inside that, “Most house parents provide a deleterious examples for their house members to follow. Contrary to that failed philosophy, the Mother of Andromeda (Blake Andromeda) and I have always provided the best examples possible for our members, to inspire them to do great in their lives, and not become a statistic of the ball-scene. Mother Andromeda; a decorated soldier and member of Andromeda for more than 10 years, continues the track toward his college degree as well as training the nations troops, to stand guard at the gates, as we all sleep at night.
Undeterred by the unpredictable situations society throws in our direction, I recent completed a second college graduation after my first school lost it credentials. On May 9, 2009, I participated in the 45th Commencement ceremony as a graduate, at Harold Washington College in Chicago. Majoring in Criminal Justice, I’m making arrangements to attend U.I.C (University of Illinois at Chicago) during the spring session of 2010. Mother Blake Andromeda, Tigger Andromeda, Steve Andromeda; also a graduate of the same school, and other family members, attended the function as our house celebrated another accomplishment.

During the summer, Andromeda spends time trying to figure out ways to keep our younger members out of doing nothing for the summer, and preventing the ball scene from becoming their life. This year as with previous years, I (Father Gentry Andromeda) attend the Chicago Annual Puerto Rican Pride Celebrations 2009.

The 40th Annual Pride Fest in Chicago Report.
Over the years, Andromeda has undergone a lot of changes and with those changes, came a lot of self realization for many of its members. On June 28, 2009, the Legendary House of Andromeda participated in the Gay Pride Celebrations, at
Sponsored by the Legendary Father Gentry Andromeda and Mother Blake Andromeda, the Andromeda Picnic and Pride Day Celebration at Montrose beach brought out Andromeda members from the past and present as we all enjoyed the festivities and each others company. Father Gentry Andromeda along with Tigger and Antwan Andromeda, arrived at the beach around 7:00am in the morning, which happens to be the best time to pick your perfect location. Overall, the picnic was great and just as in previous years, Andromeda played host to as many as one-hundred pride fest goers and their families. The goal and hopes of our function is always to bridge the gap between our house and other houses within the Mid-West ball scene. Pioneer/Legend/Father Gentry Andromeda Take's Andromeda To Puerto Rico!!!!
On Aug 14 2009, as the pioneer and father of the Legendary House of Andromeda, I took a mini vacation to a place I have always heard about, but never had the opportunity to visit. As part of my family tradition, every year we have a family reunion and this year was no different, except for the fact that another part of my family's heritage was forged on the beautiful Island of Puerto Rico. After discovering this fact during my family reunion on July 4, 2009, I decided I was going to visit my people.
Upon arriving at the airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I rushed to pick up my bags at the claim area. In a place where most of the people spoke Spanish and some of the people looked like me, I found myself wondering if I was going to be able to communicate. Low and behold, most of the younger people on the island also spoke English, and that was the relief I needed. If there is one word to use to describe my experience in Puerto Rico; I would say, “Beautiful.”
My first night, I stay up all night long. I meet up with one of my cousins and I was shown the love and life that Puerto Rico had to offer me. I forgot about work, school, and many other things. It was like being in a peaceful place. Instead of staying on the other side of the island with family, I got a hotel off Ashford Avenue in the Condado areas. I partied one night at a club called “Liquid” and another club called “Laser” located in the heart of where the fun was.
I took a visit to the LGBN center on Ponce De Leon Avenue and had a blast talking with the gay kids there and yes, I was able to show them some of my Old Way style of vogueing. When asked how they heard about vogueing, most would reply saying that they watch it on YouTube. Some would claim that they have been to New York on occasions. But all mentioned the fact that they have never had a person from the state’s representing a house to come to the island with a Flag of their house; that Andromeda was the first time for most of them.
The House of Andromeda has many members that are Puerto Rican descendant and I think that my experience on the Island of Puerto Rico really helped me to understand the beauty, the love, and culture of my people. I was giving a tour by my cousin of many areas of the island. From the hood, to the beautiful houses all over the island, and the people, I wanted to experience everything Puerto Rico had to offer. I really enjoyed my time at the clubs and the casinos too. Later this year, I will be returning to Puerto Rico with other House of Andromeda members.

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, I had the opportunity to enjoy, yet again, another one of Chicago’s balls. In 2006, Andromeda attended the first, “How Do I Look ball,” therefore it was only fitting to show our support during the second installment. As the one of the Mid-West founding fathers, I belief it to be a duty to attend as many functions as possible for the sake of the ball members. For the most part, I would take a ton of photos and let them convey the beauty of the event through illustration. This time, I decided to do it slightly different—videos.

Like on previous occasion, I took just enough photos to account for the people in the build and from my count, in regards to heavy hitters versus the first time ball goers, the building had a nice crowd and the participant came to dance. “Rags-To-Richs” Ball Report.”
Prior to the date of the ball, Marco informed all V.I.P’s of the function to arrive by 10:45pm because his function was going to start promptly at 11:00pm. Unfortunately, the eventuality of that start time was not met. At no fault of his own, The Legendary Marco Herrera was forced to deal with issues at the location, as a result of a prior event host there by someone else. So for the first hour, he was forced to clarify and to make things right, for the ball (Rags) so that his function could take place—Herrera stay! During the ordeal, all guest arriving before 10:45pm were giving the just rewards for being on time.
Around 12:15am; that’s Sunday morning for you people still sleeping, the authorities including a sergeant from the Chicago Police Department, cleared the event, and gave Marco Herrera approval to host “RAGS-To-Richs 7” and the guest standing outside were all allowed to entry the building. Over the years, I have seen many great and many not so great events unfold in the
Now for the event, when I tell you the building was loaded wall-to-wall with Icons, legends, statements, and stars, you better believe it. There was not shortage of competition in the building this night. Anybody that thought they would sail through a category was mistaking. Now there was a situation with the grand Prize category which involved only one person walking before the category was closed. Once other had realized Grand Prize had started and closed, it was already too late. And frankly, Marco was correct in his discussion to award the 1000.00 to the person that walked on time. But in the spirit of Vogue and performance for the gods, the other contestant refused to not be able to show their s talents and walked the category anyway, regardless of getting the cash or trophy. “That’s the type of spirit I love in the ball room.” In return for the many contestants that walked, despite no reward, “Vogue Evolution” donated an additional 1000.00 dollar for the category, and the remaining people for grand prize battled down.
On behalf of Mother Blake Andromeda and myself, I would like to also extend a warm “thank You” to all the members of the House of Andromeda that were able to attend “Rags 7”, yet again, to help show our support for Marco and his House. Overall, Our house enjoyed ourselves and had fun seeing many old member, who now call home in other houses, but have never forgotten their original family—Andromeda. All categories were called and there were no major incidents during the function. “Great Job Legendary Marco Herrera.”
